Conley Thomas is here!

*** I started writing this on Wednesday, May 18th...so pretend like you are reading it then!

I am writing this from the hospital room listening to the sweet sounds of Conley as he squeaks and coos in his sleep. What a sweet boy!

Sunday, May 15th was spent doing quite a few last minute things around the house, as well as getting out to celebrate Dan's birthday! Bruce, Karsen and I started off Sunday morning by cleaning up some last minute rooms of the house. My priority this day was to clean off the granite counter tops in the kitchen, and then mop the wood floor in the kitchen and front entry hallway. Of course if you are slightly OCD like me, you want the counter tops cleaned first so any food that may hit the floor, will get mopped up. I had been feeling the effects of a heavy belly for a few weeks, so a task as simple as wiping down the counters ended up taking longer than I thought. I could only work for about 10 minutes before I had to go sit for 5 and give my aching hips a break. Once that was done, it was time to get ready to head downtown and spend some time bar hoping with Kinsley, Dan, and their friends celebrating Dans birthday! Sadly, we didnt end up hoping with them...we made it to one bar and then headed home. It was quite a good time and Bruce and I were already talking about the next time we will head downtown to check those other places. When we got home, I wanted to mop and I knew it would take quite a while so the earlier I could get started, the better! Bruce took Karsen outside to play and I started getting to work. Just like with the counter tops, I could only mop for about 5 minutes, then I took a 5 minute break. Back and forth until the floors were done! I felt so accomplished and more than anything, I felt like I could bring a baby home from the hospital without having to worry about getting the house clean for guests. Whew!

I finally sat down around 6p to kick up my feet and relax. Well, I hardly relaxed. I kept trying to get comfortable but just couldnt quite find the magic spot, so by 8p I told Bruce I was going to head upstairs to lay down. Maybe being able to stretch out would help me get comfy. It took me a while to fall asleep but I was out around 10p. Little did I know...the excitement was just about to begin! I was woken up around 12:30a with some mild cramping but truly thought nothing of it. I knew it had to be SOMETHING though because I had a heck of time trying to fall back asleep. Around 1:30a, the cramping was getting a little more intense so I decided to start tracking them. I tracked for the next hour...but throughout that hour, I realized that this baby may be on the way, so I called my mom to tell her that we may need to be heading to the hospital. She got up, and started to head our direction. In the mean time, I called the on call nurse at my OB office and she said "Well, it sounds like you are having contractions, but I bet you have an hour or two before you need to be at the hospital, so take your time." After getting off the phone with her, I got in the shower and tried to make as little noise as possible so Bruce could continue to sleep. It was 3a at this point, but of course, he woke up when I turned the water on. He says "Is everything ok?" Another contraction hit so I just kind of stood there bent over and breathed through it. Once it passed I said "I think its time to go to the hospital." Bruce said "Oh...ok!" He was clearly still trying to wake up because he said "Is that clock right? It's 3 am?" I said "yes!" He thought it was just time to wake up and get ready for the day. HA! Hardly!

So I get in the shower, and Bruce gets some things together. Lucky for me, I already had my hospital bag packed and ready to go. Being "seasoned" at this, we both realized we didnt need to pack nearly the amount of stuff we packed the first time. Haha. I got out of the shower, dressed and by the time I got downstairs, mom had arrived at the house. At this time, my contractions were a lot closer together! How could this be?! With Karsen, my water broke and contractions were 20 minutes apart! I had all kinds of time! This time, I dont remember my water breaking, I was woken up with contractions 5 minutes apart, and within 2 hours, they were getting much more intense and closer together. This labor was the polar opposite of my labor with Karsen. I thought I had a lot more time, but by the time we got in the CRV to head to the hospital, I couldnt even sit in the seat...the contractions were so painful so I was bracing myself through the pain.

We got to the hospital right at 4a and got checked in. Once I was in triage, I got a gown on and they checked my cervix. I didnt know what to expect but she looked up and said "She is at an 8" and I said "WHAT?! 8 centimeters?!" She said "Yes! This baby is coming soon!" It took me ALL. DAY. LONG. to get to an 8 with Karsen. I just assumed it would take me a while to do the same with Conley. HA! Not at all. The nurse said "Well, you are scheduled for a C section tomorrow. You still want us to take him via C Sect or you want to try for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) this time?" I said "I still want a C section." I was told by the last doc that the way my pelvis was shaped that there was no way to get a baby through the opening unless it was a 5 pound kid. With all the extra weight I was carrying, I KNEW Conley wasnt gonna be no 5 pounds. I wasnt about to agree to a VBAC to just run into the same problem. I wanted to medication to mask the contraction pain, and I wanted to have a baby quick. Once I decided on a C sect (they asked me 3 times hoping Id probably change my mind) they started moving A LOT faster. The anesthesiologist came in, forced me to relive Karsen's birth (remember how the epidural slipped out...yea..how could I forget) and then said "I will make sure that doesnt happen this time. Then, a few nurses came in to do other stuff, and finally the on call doc made his way in. The whole gang was here and ready. They wheeled me down the hall to the OR and I transferred myself to the table. Mind you, painful contractions the entire time. I have a high pain tolerance but DAMN...I was ready for some medicine. The anesthesiologist got to work getting the catheter in and once the juice started flowing, I could feel my legs start to go numb and it was MAGIC! With the lower 2/3 of my body lifeless, the nurses swung my legs around and they got all the stuff ready for the procedure. Bruce came in all gowned up too, and we were officially ready to have a baby. What an amazing experience to be AWAKE for the birth this time, and be able to hold Bruce's hand through it all made all the difference in the world. They got the surgery started around 5:10a and by 5:28a we heard Conley's first cry! Turn away now if this is too graphic, but I loved seeing them hold Conley over the draping covered in the uterine goo, and screaming his head off. I started to cry. What an amazing sight! I was in love immediately. I never had that feeling with Karsen due to all of the unfortunate circumstances. I remember saying "thank you" to the anesthesiologist not for the pain management, but for his ability to make the spinal block take proper affect so I could be awake. So great!

From there, we were wheeled into the recovery room to begin our 15 minute check-ins. Conley was doing great. Hanging out with dad and making an occasional noise. I nursed him a few times and he did a great job. After about an hour, I was ready to be in our mother baby room, but they always want to watch patients for 2 hours. Conley got his first bath and dad and I were texting family and friends like crazy to let them know of all the excitement!

After the 2 hours passed, we were heading upstairs. Our room was great although the view left something to be desired...but what did I care?! I had a super cute baby to stare at!

Bruce, Conley and I spent the morning getting situated in the room and then Bruce left to go pick up Karsen so he could meet his baby brother. When Karsen and Bruce got back, Karsen was clearly more interested in the fun stuff in the hospital room and could give two licks about Conley. Bruce even tried to lay Conley in Karsen's lap and Karsen turned away saying "Nooooo." We certainly werent going to force it.

Grandma and Grandpa showed up about an hour later and gave Conley LOTS of love. They then took Karsen back to their house so we could relax the rest of the afternoon. When Karsen came back later that evening, he was much more receptive to baby brother and wanted to hold him!

It has been a great couple of days at the hospital, but I am ready to get home. Conley has been such a great baby already. I look forward to the summer home with both my boys!

39 weeks

Well, we have almost fully recovered from the craziness of last week. Karsen still has red bumps on his skin, but they are all dry and crusted over, and they are slowly disappearing. Poor kid. At least his happy go lucky nature has returned and he was back to daycare all week.

This week also marked my last week of school for the year! For a while last weekend, I didnt think I would make it through this week without going into labor. Last Saturday I overdid it and was too active with Karsen. I just wanted him to get better so I did whatever I could to make sure he was playing and having fun. By 5p that night, I was really regretting it. My entire body hurt and my stomach was SUPER tight. I took it so much easier on Sunday and told myself that this last week of school would only work out well if I spent a lot of time sitting. Sitting is exactly what I did. I would come home each evening from school and felt good. Felt relaxed. Felt like I might actually make it to Friday. Of course if I did go into labor early, no biggie. Life would go on at school and they would be ok without me, but I knew I would feel so much more relaxed and ready for this baby if I could make it to Friday, get through graduation practice, get my room entirely packed up, and everything ready for summer break. WHEW...well it is Friday and I made it! Of course, I was on my feet so much more than I had anticipated, but that is ok. Karsen is down for the night, and Bruce is off to poker, so I am relaxing on the couch.

How far along? 39 weeks. Size of a mini watermelon. Finally back to a fruit I am familiar with!
Total weight gain: Another appointment on Thursday and I was still 24 pounds up!
Maternity clothes: Anything loose around my midsection is ok by me. There are a few certain things I can wear that are loose enough, but otherwise, almost all of my clothes are NOT comfortable.
Sleep: Sleep has been not so great this week. I have been waking up quite a bit. Some times to go to the bathroom, other times because I was anxious thinking I may go into labor early. Again, now that I have made it through the last day of school, I am hopeful I can relax and get better sleep this weekend!
Best moment this week: Making it to Friday!
Miss anything? Sleep. And wine! My mouth is watering thinking of that first sip of wine!
Movement: This kid is still moving! Smaller movements because I know he has run out of space, but he is still moving and shaking!
Food cravings: Raspberry iced tea.
Symptoms: Tight belly, aching hips, sore lower back. Wha wha. I cant even bother to complain because I know some women would LOVE to experience these pains but cant. So I am soaking them up while I can since I have been given this blessing.
Belly button in or out? Flat. Totally flat. Not sure when it happened but it did!
Wedding rings on or off? Only wearing my wedding band now. Fingers feel huge!
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy! So ready to meet this kid!
Looking forward to: TUESDAY!!!

UPDATE** I wrote this post before I actually hit 39 weeks so I had planned on adding pictures once I took my 39 week bump pic. Well, I kept forgetting to take it, and then Conley came! So I am just going to post this update and then move on to the excitement!

38 weeks

11 days from today and we will have a new member to the family! Woot! To say I am excited is a serious understatement! I am also terrified...but mainly excited. And whats funny is I have BIG plans on getting out of the house more this time around than I did with Karsen. I think having Karsen around, I will be forced to get out more with Baby C. Im just excited to see how our family dynamic shifts, how Karsen reacts, and how I try to handle 2 kids this summer. Yikes!

This has been a HECK of a week and I would be completely ok if a week like this never happened again. Karsen came down with Hand Foot Mouth disease. What is it, you may ask?! Well, it sounds like a disease that should have been completely eradicated back in the 1700's, but no. It is very easy to contract if you are around another child who has it. Kids 5 and younger can get it really easy. The worst part, once a kid gets it, you dont know right away. It actually simmers in the kid for a solid 2-3 days and then the physical symptoms hit all the sudden. So clearly, Karsen got it Friday at daycare, because by Monday, he had little red bumps ALL OVER his body. Sadly that was not the worse of it. Those bumps turned into sores and blisters. The worst sores and blisters were in his mouth, on the palms of his hands and his feet. He also had some really bad bumps around his diaper area, but none of them developed into blisters like the rest did. Ugh. Tuesday and Wednesday had to be the worst days because K didnt eat as much as normal (sores in his mouth) and his naps were terrible...again most likely because of the itchiness of the bumps. Ugh. Thank goodness for Grandma! She spent those two days with K trying to nurse him back to health. Papa came in town for Karsen duty on Thursday and Friday. We are so incredibly blessed to have such awesome parents who are willing to watch our child who cant go to daycare, to allow us both to still go to work. Had this happened months ago, I think we would have taken the days off, but being within two weeks of Baby C, I am already missing that full last week of school and might have been pushing my luck to ask for more time off this week. It is Friday night and Karsen has finally gotten back to his normal sleeping and napping routine. He still has sores around his mouth, and on his hands and feet, but they are starting to dry up. While he LOOKS scary, he is totally back to himself which is so great! Here are some pics from the week!

This pic above and below are from Sunday...before we realized he was sick.

This is from Tuesday, His first day at home with Grandma. He still tried to play around and act normal, but we knew something was going on.

Wednesday...with loads of Calamine lotion! It helped with the itching and dried up the bumps!

Stuffing his face with snack on Thursday with papa. You can see the Calamine lotion and some of the bumps below. YUCK!

Another pic from Thursday. Playing outside with his ball and tee! And below, throwing the frisbee. We need to work on the technique.

Playing outside Friday evening. He pulled his hat down pretty low and was acting so silly. Haha. Back to himself! And below, kicking the ball off of the tower slide with neighbor Rose! He loves playing with Rose!

How far along? 38 weeks. Baby is the size of a leek. Looking at these pictures on the app, it seems like the baby is getting smaller which is NOT the case.
Total weight gain: At the appointment Thursday, I was up 24 pounds.
Maternity clothes: Anything loose around my midsection is ok by me. There are a few certain things I can wear that are loose enough, but otherwise, almost all of my clothes are NOT comfortable.
Sleep: Sleep has been ok. Waking up more during the night to rotate from side to side.
Best moment this week: I would say Thursday when Karsen got up...he was acting more like himself and that just makes things so much easier.
Miss anything? Sleep. And wine!
Movement: This kid is moving ALL. THE. TIME. He is getting to the point though where he is trying to stretch but doesnt have room...and it kind of hurts! Easy kid!
Food cravings: Raspberry iced tea and cereal. Weird.
Symptoms: Tight belly...and tired early in the evening.
Belly button in or out? In.
Wedding rings on or off? On but more snug. I havent worn my engagement ring the last two days...the wedding band is about all that I can stand to wear.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy! So ready to meet this kid!
Looking forward to: Meeting this little boy and getting my body back. Not saying I had a desirable body prior to this but I just want my organs to go back where they belong...haha. I have been retaining some fluids this week and swelling more than previous weeks. Ankles are now cankles...and my fingers and toes are like sausages. I vaguely remember this happening at this point with Karsen too and I certainly have no room to complain because I have friends who dealt with swelling for WEEKS...even months prior to their labor, so I can handle the last week and a half.

37 weeks

We are only a few short weeks away from welcoming Baby C into the family! This past weekend I got most everything ready and organized in his room. I know I have been saying that a lot the last few posts, but I finally moved the furniture around to where I wanted it, all of the clothes, wraps, bibs, burp rags, etc have been washed in the infant detergent, and the diapers and wipes are ready in the changing table. I have already started to make a list of things I need to bring to the hospital, but this second time around, I know I will leave most of the extra crap at home. When I had Karsen, I packed anything and everything I could think of, then, I hardly used any of it, so when we got back home, it sat in my luggage for a solid 3 weeks on our bedroom floor. This time I know that I dont need nearly the clothes I took last time, so my bag should be much lighter!

Here are some pics of Karsen over the last week. Again, if you are on Tiny Beans, you have most likely seen all of these.

In celebration of one of our last free weekends, Grandma and Grandpa agreed to take Karsen overnight so Bruce and I could go out for a nice dinner and get some stuff done around the house. We got Karsen's carseat moved to the side of the car in both vehicles, and we installed both of the bases for the infant carrier, in both cars. It feels good to have all of that done. We then went out to dinner at Cooper's Hawk on the Plaza and of course walked down to The Cheesecake Factory for a slice of cheesecake to go! Yum! Below are some pics of Karsen having a good time with Grandma and Grandpa!

Here is a pic of Karsen with his Little Hearts shirt on in support of a good friend, Lydia!

When we got home from Grandma and Grandpa's, Karsen got to play in his new outdoor toy! Mom went to all kinds of garage sales looking for something like this. He spent hours on it!

A selfie with our "Love4Lydia" shirts on!

How far along? 37 weeks. Size of swiss chard...which is some sort of leafy green.
Total weight gain: According to my last appoint, I was up 21 pounds from my official starting weight. That is a number I could handle to hear, and should hopefully drop once I have the baby and can start nursing! That helped with Karsen last time.
Maternity clothes: Anything loose around my midsection is ok by me.
Sleep: Sleep has been ok still. Still getting up to go to the bathroom, and still some pain in my hips. Oh well. Nothing I cant handle.
Best moment this week: Spending a night without the kid. While I did miss him, it was nice to have some time to ourselves before the chaos of two kiddos will begin!
Miss anything? Sleep.
Movement: This kid is moving ALL. THE. TIME. Best feeling ever.
Food cravings: Raspberry iced tea and anything sweet.
Symptoms: Tight belly...and tired early in the evening.
Belly button in or out? In.
Wedding rings on or off? On and comfortable.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy most of the time now that I know the end is in sight...at school and with meeting this baby!
Looking forward to: Meeting this little boy. As the days pass, I get more and more excited. Two weeks from tomorrow we will have our little dude!
